About IGD-TP

The Implementing Geological Disposal of radioactive waste Technology Platform is a technology platform dedicated to initiate and carry out European strategic initiatives to facilitate the stepwise implementation of safe, deep geological disposal of spent fuel, high-level waste, and other long-lived radioactive waste. It will address the remaining scientific, technological and social challenges, and support the waste management programmes in the Member States. The IGD-TP was launched on the 12th of November, 2009. Its initiators are the European Commission and organisations who contributed to and endorsed the Vision Report of the platform. The platform welcomes all European stakeholders (industry, research and academia, research centres, technical safety organisations, non-governmental organisations, associations, SMEs, …) endorsing the IGD-TP Vision and willing to contribute positively and constructively to the platform’s goals, such as establishing and implementing the Strategic Research Agenda and the accompanying Deployment Strategy steered by the common vision.

About IGD-TP vision

By 2025, the first geological disposal facilities for spent fuel, high-level waste, and other long-lived radioactive waste will be operating safely in Europe.

And to commit to the following:

build confidence in the safety of geological disposal solutions among European citizens and decision-makers;
encourage the establishment of waste management programmes that integrate geological disposal as the accepted option for the safe long-term management of long-lived and/or high-level waste;
facilitate access to expertise and technology and maintain competences in the field of geological disposal for the benefit of Member States.
